Program Description
Shelter Music Boston received its first major grant award from The Ilene Beal Charitable Foundation. This grant of $250,000 over five years will support two significant initiatives. SMB will continue its ongoing program of transformative concerts at The Dimock Center’s women’s recovery programs and has renamed this concert series The Ilene Beal Concerts for Women. The grant will also partially support the launch of a pilot to bring our music program to children and families affected by homelessness.
The Shelter Music Boston Children and Family Shelter Program pilot was developed in collaboration with Boston Philharmonic (BPO) and pairs SMB’s expertise in concert delivery to those who are currently homeless with the BPO’s established music education programs for school children. The first performance was held on February 2nd at the after school program of the Malden-based organization, Housing Families. We will provide monthly concerts for children served by Housing Families throughout 2018.
We are remarkably grateful to The Ilene Beal Charitable Foundation, which was established by Ilene Beal, an executive with former BayBanks, who lost her battle with cancer in 2015. Ms. Beal, known for her hard work, attention to detail, and her absolute professionalism, was a champion for women in the corporate world. We are deeply honored to carry on Ilene Beal’s legacy and by making such a substantial investment in SMB, the Foundation affirms our work and our approach, joining a dedicated community of contributors who make all of our programming possible.
